After having beaten polio, Indian government aims for freedom from measles

Dr Harsh VardhanThe Union Health Minister said that an ambitious drive will be launched to eliminate or control various diseases, including measles, which affects numerous people every year and ultimately leads to death of many. He further said that the Government has already initiated measures to eliminate measles, Rubella and German measles (also known as Kala-azar) by 2015. Other diseases that are common in India and needs to be eliminated include parasitic disease Filaria (by 2015) and leprosy (by 2017 at the district level). The Health Minister said, ‘We got rid of detrimental diseases like Smallpox in 1977 and Polio in 2014. Hence, there is no reason why we cannot eliminate other diseases from the nation.’


Harsh Vardhan said that a meeting of health secretaries from around the nation is being called for in this regard on October 9. Following this, a nationwide programme will be launched to eliminate these diseases. He also said that a detailed protocol and module to deal with the other common diseases in India such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, hypertension and other diseases, which will be set to action after the final discussion of these health issues on October 9. 



Dr Vardhan, hinting at ‘Ayush’ said, that the Health Ministry is ready with ‘The Recognition of New Systems of Medicine Bill, 2014,’ to decide the distinct characteristics of alternative medicine. Ayush is a medical program that includes Ayurveda and Yoga, which may receive a positive appreciation from the Central Government. He also said that for the first time the Indian Government will host the ”World Ayurveda Congress’ scheduled between November 7 – 9 and will be participated in by 24 ministries from around 40 countries around the world. The ‘Universal Health Assurance Mission’  is still to get the Government’s nod. This mission that will contain 50 essential drugs with a diagnostic package and around 30 Ayush drugs is set to be made accessible to all citizens after Centre’s approval.
