Ebola in US: Ebola patient was earlier sent home due to hospital miscommunication

Ebola VirusThe US CDC Tuesday confirmed a patient travelling from Liberia in Texas to be diagnosed with Ebola. The patient, whose identity and nationality has not been revealed yet, is the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States. According to reports, the patient initially told a nurse he had travelled in Africa but was sent home anyway, which raises concerns about US preparedness for the spread of the deadly virus.

An official from the hospital mentioned that there was a miscommunication among hospital staff and therefore the patient was sent home. However, after leaving the hospital man came in contact with open community four days, and he even came in contact with schoolchildren before he was finally isolated in a hospital, officials said Wednesday. ‘I know that parents are being extremely concerned about that development,’ said Texas Governor Rick Perry.

‘These children have been identified and they are being monitored and the disease cannot be transmitted before having any symptoms.’  He arrived in Texas on September 20 and did not exhibit symptoms until September 24, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention chief Tom Frieden said Tuesday. He sought medical care on the 26th, but was sent home because the medical team ‘felt clinically it was a low-grade common viral disease,’ said Mark Lester, executive vice president of Texas Health Resources.

‘He volunteered that he had travelled from Africa in response to the nurse operating the checklist and asking that question,’ Lester added. ‘Regretfully, that information was not fully communicated throughout the full team.’  He was returned via ambulance to the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas on September 28, and was placed in strict isolation.

The patient is currently in serious but stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. The incubation period for Ebola is between two and 21 days. Patients are not contagious until they start to show signs of fever, aches, vomiting and diarrhea. As US officials scrambled to track down people the man encountered while sick, the worldwide death toll from Ebola jumped higher, to 3,338 dead and 7,178 infected since the beginning of the year, the World Health Organization said.

Meanwhile, the United Nations announced its first suspected victim of Ebola, a Liberian man who worked for the UN mission in Liberia and died of a probable but unconfirmed Ebola infection last week. In response to the fast-moving outbreak, the World Bank boosted its aid to the campaign by adding 170 million toward expanding the health-care workforce and buying needed supplies for care and treatment.

Here are some preventive measures for people who cannot avoid traveling.

  • If you’re taking medication for any infectious diseases and if you’re currently suffering from viral flu, you should avoid traveling before complete recovery. When you’re suffering from an infection, your immunity weakens. This could be a good opportunity for the virus to attack you.

  • Older people, young peers and pregnant women should not travel at all. They have a high risk of acquiring infection.

  • Those who are traveling should be extra careful about their diet. Eat a balanced diet. Avoid junk food and under-cooked food, especially meat.

Following precautionary measures for travelers.

  • In any case, avoid handling items that you suspect have been contaminated, especially blood or body fluids.

  • Avoid contact with other people and avoid visiting hospitals where treatment for Ebola is being given. Read more about Ebola Virus Travel Tips — Precautions you should take

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan to set up health camps at Ram Lila

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan addresses press at Patna Airport on June 20, 2014. (Photo: IANS)Every year, thousands of people gather to watch traditional enactment of Ramyana during Navratri festival. The health ministry identifies this traditional event as an opportunity to improve health in India. Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Wednesday revealed that this year Ram Lila would be linked with regular health checkups. The minister said that the camps will be set up at five locations during the ongoing festival, involving community health volunteers.

This would be done under Swasth Chetna Evam Jan Sahyog Abhiyaan (SCEJSA), which will be the first government initiative to draw people into the benefits of promotive and preventive health in the national capital. ‘SCEJSA camps have been opened at five big Ram Lila grounds and a Durga Puja mandap in Chittaranjan Park during the festive season. I urge all to avail this opportunity to get themselves checked by doctors from the leading hospitals of Delhi, and also avail free diagnostics and secondary treatment opportunities,’ said Harsh Vardhan.

The locations of the shivirs are: Luv-Kush Ram Lila at Lal Quila Maidan, Sri Balaji Ram Lila at CBD ground Karkardooma; Ram Lila Ground, Trinagar (Keshavpuram); Shalimar Bagh, near BL Block; and Ram Lila Ground in Ashok Vihar Phase 1 (near Dhyan Chand Stadium). The health ministry, in a statement, said: ‘More than 50 lakh people participate in the Ram Lila celebrations during the 10-day-long Navratri period’. In all, 26 doctors, 90 paramedics/nurses and more than 200 volunteers are involved in SCEJSA. They have been drawn from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and various hospitals of the Delhi government.

‘This is one of the ways a social movement around health should ideally work. We are finalizing a broader strategy, which will be discussed with the health secretaries of the states Oct 9. The gains from SCEJSA, in terms of experience, would serve as inputs for modelling a nation-wide health movement involving all stakeholders,’ he said.

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan encourages people to donate blood

Dr Harsh VardhanUnion Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Wednesday announced the government’s initiative, a nationwide social movement, to encourage people to donate blood, on the occasion of the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day.

The movement is aimed at bridging the gap between the demand and supply of blood. While addressing more than 2,000 school children and other volunteers he said, ‘We have a shortfall of 2-3 million units per year in India. Through more voluntarism we can easily make up the deficit. Till date, 84 percent of the requirement of safe blood has been fulfilled. We must take it to 100 percent soon.’

Highlighting the benefits of blood donation he said, ‘By donating a unit of blood a year a person can get more blessings than by going to a place of worship’. He also highlighted that donating blood does not cause deteriorate of heath and is in fact helps improve one’s health condition. It secures a person from heart attacks and cancer. It is a good way of burning calories and moreover gives the supreme satisfaction of saving lives, he added.

The minister also flagged a rally with the theme: ‘Run for the Little Red Dot Power’ at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to create awareness about blood donation. The rally comprised volunteers from different educational institutions, NSS volunteers, regular repeat voluntary blood donors, voluntary blood organisations and blood bank officers promoting the cause of voluntary blood donation.

Ebola in Liberia: US deploys 700 soldiers to combat Ebola

ebola virusUS Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has authorised the deployment of 700 soldiers to Liberia to help with the fight against the Ebola epidemic there, the Defence Department said in a statement Wednesday.

The troops will be deployed in late October to supervise the construction of Ebola treatment units, conduct site surveys and provide engineering expertise in an area with a range of infrastructure repair needs, Xinhua reported.

Last week, 15 construction-specialty sailors from the US Army arrived in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, to offer engineering support to the Operation United Assistance, conducting site surveys for future hospitals, and supply storage and training facilities for health care workers.

The deployments are part of a whole-of-government response to the Ebola outbreak, according to the statement. About 195 Defence Department personnel are now in west Africa, and over the last weekend the equipment for a 25-bed hospital and two mobile labs arrived in Monrovia.

The hospital will be in operation around mid-October, the statement said, adding that US military personnel are not and will not be providing direct care to Ebola patients.

Educate yourself about Ebola: Knowing the symptoms, modes of transmission and preventive measures is the first step to prevent the spread of the disease. This information is especially important for those who are travelling to and from affected areas in West Africa.   (Read: Has the Ebola virus really come to India?)

Maintain sanitary conditions: Basic hygiene plays a very important role in preventing Ebola. The exact way by which the virus enters the body is still debatable but skin and eyes are suggested routes for viral entry. However, food and water may also serve as source of entry. So, simple acts like washing hands before eating and disinfecting surfaces and covering the mouth can help prevent the spread of the virus, especially in areas surrounding the areas of outbreak.   (Read: Ebola Facts: Top 7 myths busted)

Avoid contact with blood and body fluids:  Ebola virus spreads through all body fluids including blood, semen, saliva, sweat, urine, fecal matter and vomit of infected individuals. Healthcare workers and medical staff who are more likely to come in contact with infected body fluids, infected needles and first aid, should handle them with protective gear. Latest Ebola News: Death toll in Congo reaches 42

Ebola virusDemocratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) Minister of Public Health Felix Kabange confirmed Wednesday a total 42 people have lost their lives to Ebola virus disease in confirmed or suspected cases.

Out of 42, a total 30 cases were confirmed Ebola positive, out of which 16 died, two remain in isolation, and 12 are healed. Other deaths are suspected and probable cases, Xinhua reported citing the minister.

Kabange said that 243 people were being monitored among the 245 who had been in contact with Ebola patients. ‘The dead include eight health workers and three isolation cases, all in the Equateur province,’ he added. With the first case confirmed in mid-August, DRC is experiencing its seventh Ebola outbreak since 1976.

Here are a few reasons Ebola virus is deadly

It can kill within seven days: Unlike other viruses (like HIV) that can remain dormant in a person for years without causing the disease, Ebola violently multiplies until the viral particles are amplified to about 100 million viral particles in a droplet of blood. Further, without resting in a dormant stage the virus kills the host to find a new one. The fatality rate of the disease is 60 percent.

There is no vaccine or treatment available: What makes this virus deadly is the fact that researchers have not been able to find an effective treatment or preventive technique to combat the virus and the spread of the disease. The experimental drug Zmapp has shown promising results but the safety and efficacy of the drug are to be evaluated. So, as of now, neither do we have an effective form of therapy nor do we have a vaccine to prevent the disease.

Attacks every part of the human body: Ebola only needs a host cell that can help it produce multiple copies of itself. What worsens the condition is the fact that the virus does not need a specific type of cell to multiply (unlike other deadly diseases). According to studies, except for skeletal muscles and bones, the virus is known to infect every part of the human body. Connective tissues, the ones that hold your internal organs in place, are primary targets of the virus.

Is She Stalking You?

It's always flattering when a woman is into you. But what happens when she's a little too interested? There's a fine line between clingy and concerning--and your ex-girlfriend (or prospective partner) may be crossing it. Here's how to tell:

1. She's your #1 Twitter follower.

"Long gone are the days that a jilted lover merely drove past her ex-paramour's house," says Wendy L. Patrick, Ph.D, a San Diego County Deputy District Attorney, and coauthor of Reading People. "Now people stalk each other online, through friends of Facebook friends, or through cleverly placed GPS devices." So if she has something to say about all of your status updates, is constantly re-tweeting you, or drags out any and all online conversations far longer than they need to be, there may be a problem, Patrick says. Some sites like LinkedIn also let you monitor who is viewing your information. Pay close attention.

Block her: Adjust your privacy settings to reflect what you are and aren't comfortable with her seeing, Patrick says. And even if you do block her entirely, never post your location online. Internet-savvy stalkers can often still track down that information if they really want to.

2. She feels slighted.

Typically, female stalkers are either exes or women with whom you've at least had one date, says Patrick. Perhaps she's trying to get you back in her life, or right any wrongs she feels you've committed against her, says Robert T. Muller, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at York University who specializes in trauma and attachment.

Don't reason with her: It's likely that she'll feel like you're apologizing and still care about her, which is plenty of reason to keep on stalking. "Remember that many stalkers misperceive innocuous messages as romantic," Patrick says. "They read sexual meanings into neutral communication and often take this as encouragement."

3. She doesn't seem like her normal self.

"After a breakup, unfortunately, some people can deteriorate psychologically," Muller says. While people without a history of mental illness can fall into stalking habits, too, depression and psychological stress can exasperate underlying issues such as paranoia or bipolar disorder. If her personality seems to have taken a drastic change, it could signal something more complex than the typical breakup woes, says Muller.

Get her help: Depending on your relationship history, it might be appropriate to tell a family member that you're concerned about her mental health. However, it's important that your message doesn't get back to her, as she could think it means that you have feelings for her.

4. You just feel creeped out.

To determine if her interest has gone too far, you need to take stock of your own feelings, Muller says. If whatever she's doing makes you feel frightened, don't ignore it. "Guys especially try to shrug off stalking. But it can be dangerous, and you don't always know someone's endgame," he says. Likewise, you shouldn't assume it's normal or that you can handle it on your own, according to Patrick.

Tell someone: Report any stalking to the police, suggests detective Mike Proctor, author of Antidote for A Stalker. If it's happening at work, you can also tell HR and your company's Workplace Violence Team (if it has one). The proper authorities will help alleviate the situation, Proctor says.

The Truth About Fear

Make a Friend Freak Out
Opting for the trick, not the treat? Joe Gatto, host of TV's Impractical Jokers, likes this move: First, find a helper. Then empty your fridge, shelves and all. Turn it off and hide inside. Have your helper ask the innocent victim to grab a beer. When the fridge door opens, burst out screaming. As he's catching his breath, tell him he's experiencing a spike in his heart rate of about 20 beats per minute, according to research from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Your point? No matter what he says, you did not nearly give him a heart attack. Now hand that man a beer.

Stave Off Stage Fright
Public speaking can cause paralyzing fear. While you're still able to move, flip your smartphone camera to selfie and video mode, hold it out, and hit "record," says Bill Hoogterp, author of Your Perfect Presentation. Wave and say hello. Then play it back, focusing on what you did well. Next, say something ridiculously effusive: "I'm the sexiest man in the room!" Again, play it back, looking for positives. Now prop the phone up, walk around, and talk about your work. Keep doing this, adding more each time. These mini ego boosts will lift your confidence and settle your nerves.

Q: Why does chocolate and peanut butter seem like such an irresistible combination?

You mean why is anything that's labeled "Reese's" the crack cocaine of candy? Partly because about 90 percent of taste is the result of smell, and in the case of peanut butter and chocolate, the complex interplay of their odors works very well. "The flavor and composition of roasted nuts are close to those of cocoa beans, but complementary," says Gregory Ziegler, Ph.D., a Penn State University professor of food science who studies chocolate. The soft nut oils add some punch too. "If they mix with the cocoa butter, it causes everything to melt more quickly in your mouth, releasing the flavor in a burst," Ziegler says. At the same time, aromatic compounds like pyrazines are also lighting up your limbic system, a brain region that controls your memories and emotions, says Cynthia Lipka, president of the Society of Flavor Chemists. This boosts your feelings of satisfaction by tapping into deep-seated memories of moments when you indulged in the combo, such as on Halloween night or that time you tripped and your chocolate fell into someone's peanut butter. For an even bigger hit, try the combination at a warmer temperature, just before it starts to melt.

Why Every Second Matters When Treating a Stroke

My younger brother David was the first to see our father after his first stroke. He walked into the kitchen to find Dad staring out the window. He had a glazed look in his eyes, David remembers, and seemed not to recognize my brother at first. Finally he asked what his own older brother, Uncle Jimmy, was doing standing in the backyard.

"Right there," my father said, and pointed. His words were a little slurred. "It's Jimmy. Why is he here?"

Uncle Jimmy had passed away two years earlier.

I thought of that long-ago moment recently when a friend from Los Angeles wrote to tell me that she had come home from work to find her husband, "writhing in pain and grasping his cheek." My friend had once taken EMT courses before becoming a successful actress and producer. She made an on-the-spot assessment, punched in 911, and her husband was under the care of the stroke doctors at the UCLA Medical Center within an hour. Her quick thinking saved his life.

Or, as she put it, "a miracle ensued." She wasn't kidding.

Her husband had suffered what is called an ischemic stroke, when a blood clot blocked the flow of blood to his brain through the basilar artery, which feeds into the brain stem. Half of all people who suffer from blood-depriving ischemic strokes in the basilar artery--as opposed blockages elsewhere in the brain--die. Another quarter are left either comatose, partially paralyzed, or completely "locked in," wherein the patient is sentient but cannot move any voluntary muscle except for his or her eyes. Most famously, the French journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby, locked in after suffering his stroke, "dictated" his best seller The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by blinking his left eyelid to coincide with letters of the alphabet. The book took millions of blinks to write.

Because my friend got her husband newly available treatment so quickly, he is now one of the lucky few who has since walked out of the hospital with, as she put it, "but a bruise to the cerebellum and some hippocampus damage, but nothing that can't be rehabilitated."

Referring to the primary physician who treated her husband, she added, "The brilliant team at UCLA (how many brilliant 18-year-old M.D./Ph.D. actually exist in the world?) expect him to be able to travel to Vancouver to direct a film six weeks from now."

The reason I pass on this story to you today is because when curiosity got the better of me and I rang up my friend's "brilliant 18-year-old" stroke Doc at UCLA--who actually turned out to be the 37-year-old stroke specialist Dr. Jason Tarpley--we had an insightful conversation about how far medicine has come in the treatment of strokes, the No. 1 cause of severe disability and the No. 4 cause of death in the United States.

Sadly, those figures have not changed in the decade since my friend Bill Phillips--now the editor of the Men's Health mothership--wrote this poignant story about the death of his own Dad. The better news, Dr. Tarpley informs me, is that within those 10 years we have learned so much more about strokes and their treatment. In particular, he says, "I cannot stress how important it is that time is of the essence."

"Too many people who suffer strokes don't really know what has happened to them," he continues, "and there is a tendency to try to just ‘walk it off.' Then, by the time they do seek medical help, it's too late. The faster a stroke victim gets treatment, the better his chances of recovery. The basic rule of thumb is, an hour is better than two hours; three hours is worse but it's better than four hours … well you get the idea."

With blocked arteries, Dr. Tarpley explains, more brain will be saved the sooner clot-dissolving medications are administered. In some cases, he added, clots can be pulled from impacted arteries by stent-like devices. But you have to get to the clots fast. He tells me that the UCLA Medical Center's "Stroke Director," Dr. Jeffrey Saver, has studied strokes and stroke victims for years, and has put forward a pioneering theorem that quantifies why speed is such a key.

Dr. Saver's is a sort of statistics-per-minute formula that quantifies just how much every second counts. The human brain has billions upon billions of neurons, and Dr. Saver's research has led him to conclude, for example, that for every minute a stroke victim is not being treated, 1.9 million of those neurons die, never to return. In addition, an untreated stoke victim's brain will lose 14 billion synapses per minute, and in that same 60 seconds an incredible 447 miles of nerve fibers.

He also gave me a tip. The acronym FAST, he says, can help you recognize a stroke and react quickly. It stands for Facial-drooping, Arm-weakness, and Speech … the "T" is a reminder that time is invaluable in the treatment of an acute stroke. "In other words," says Dr. Tarpley, "don't try to walk it off. Call 911. Your friend's husband is the perfect example."

As you can imagine, the stroke was a wake-up call for my friend's husband. He is exercising regularly, and his diet, Dr. Tarpley notes, "is now probably more healthy than mine.

"We're learning more and more about strokes each year, each month, each day. Will we ever ‘cure' strokes? Given the too-many variables, not the least of which are genes, that's doubtful. But as far as treatment goes, we're getting better with every patient."

Every patient, that is, who gets himself or herself to an emergency room. This got me to thinking, of course. As did his comment about carrying stroke genes. My father recovered remarkably from his first stroke, his second one, too. It was the heart attack that killed him.

So if my wife, coworkers, neighbors, hell, even strangers on the street are reading this, all I ask is one favor: You see me wandering around with a glazed look on my face seeing dead people, please get me to a hospital ASAP.

The Ultimate Metabolism-Boosting Muscle Builder

Don't let the minimalist design fool you: Suspension trainers like TRX offer distinct advantages over barbells and dumbbells. "They're incredibly portable--if you have access to a door-jamb, tree, or other stable anchor, you have all you need for a total-body workout," says Michael Piercy, M.S., the 2013 TRX Overall Instructor of the Year and owner of The Lab Performance & Sports Science, a New Jersey gym.

Plus, by taking exercises off terra firma, you add an element of instability that boosts the challenge to your core and stabilizing muscles. The result: faster gains and more real-world strength.

"Suspension training systems bring a whole new dimension to the concept of body-weight training," says Piercy. The key is learning to leverage your body's relationship with gravity.

Nail The Basics
"You have to earn the harder movements," says Piercy. "Jumping ahead without mastering the fundamentals will give you a shaky foundation, and you won't have the skills you need to maximize your gains from the harder progressions." You'll also be more prone to injury. Begin with the exercises below.

Lock Down Your Core
Unlike a stable bench or machine, a suspension trainer puts your muscles in a constant battle with gravity. "Gravity always attacks your weakest point," says Piercy. "For most people, that's their core." Fight back by bracing your abs at the beginning of each exercise. That way you reinforce your spine and boost stability. The payoff: You'll generate more power.

Avoid Friction
"If you don't apply even pressure to both handles, they'll 'saw' back and forth, throwing you off balance and increasing your risk of injury," says Piercy. "Scraping" (that is, when the straps rub against your arms) is another sign of bad form. "If you can't finish an exercise without sawing or scraping, you're probably progressing too quickly," Piercy says.

3 Moves for a Total-Body Burn

1. TRX Chest Press
Grab the handles and face away from the anchor point with your feet shoulder width apart. Extend your arms straight in front of your chest and walk back a few steps so your body leans forward. Keeping your body straight, bend your arms to lower your chest until your upper arms are parallel to the floor. Pause; push back up.

MAKE IT HARDER: Walk your feet farther back or lift one foot off the floor.

2. TRX Row
Grab the handles and face the anchor point with your feet shoulder width apart. Straighten your arms out in front of you and walk your feet forward a few steps so your body leans back. Keeping your body straight, pull your chest to the handles. Pause, and return to the starting position.

MAKE IT HARDER: Walk your feet farther forward.

3. TRX Squat
Use the same starting position as the TRX row, but instead of extending your arms in front of you, hold them at 90-degree angles with your elbows by your sides and the handles at chest level; there should be light tension on the straps. Push your hips back and lower your body until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Reverse the move to return to the starting position.

MAKE IT HARDER: Perform a single-leg squat or add an explosive hop.

Your Balls: A User's Manual

Don't forget: there are two parts to your package. You already go through great lengths to protect one (your penis), but sometimes neglect the second (the nuts). If you want to ensure healthy sperm and a vibrant sex life, start showing your testes some TLC, stat. Here's how.

KEEP THEM COOL
A laptop on your lap raises your balls' temp, which may harm sperm quality, a Fertility and Sterility study found. Set devices on a table, says MH urology advisor Larry Lipshultz, M.D.

HIT THE SACK
Less sleep means more stress hormones, which can sap sperm production, says Tobias Kohler, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.S., an associate professor of urology at Southern Illinois University.

EYE THEIR SIZE
Older men with a testicular volume of 20 milliliters or more risk heart troubles, a Journal of Sexual Medicine study reports. The authors say blood vessel damage may up testes size.

GET A SAFE SNIP
A vasectomy won't cause ED, a new study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found. That is, unless you have sex within 72 hours. The possible pain or bleeding could leave you limp.

MOVE YOUR PHONE
Numerous studies have linked cellphone exposure to decreased sperm count and quality. So keep your phone in your back pocket instead of in the front one, says Dr. Lipshultz.

KILL SPIDERS
Dilated veins in your scrotum, which are similar to spider veins, may cause infertility and testicular shrinkage, says Dr. Kohler. Schedule an appointment with a urologist.

Why a steady heartbeat is bad for you

stressAccording to a recent study, if a person has a steady heartbeat when he is worried about something than he might be more susceptible to stress. The research conducted by the Concordia University showed that a less variable heartbeat when worried makes a person highly stressed later on.

‘At rest, a more variable heartbeat is a good thing. It shows that your parasympathetic nervous system is hard at work. That is the system that is responsible for the ‘rest-and-digest’ state of being – the opposite of ‘fight-or-flight’,’ explained psychology professor Jean-Philippe Gouin. The rest-and-digest phase puts you in a calm state that allows you to conserve and replenish your energy. During the study, Gouin followed 76 university students during periods of lower stress at the beginning of term and higher stress during the exam period. He found that, although all students experience similar challenges during finals, only some of them develop significant distress.

Researchers recorded participants’ heart rate variability while they were relaxing and while they were thinking about things they tend to worry about most. They also tracked participants’ moods at low stress and high stress periods during term. ‘By pinpointing those in the general population who are most vulnerable to stress, we can intervene before they hit the breaking point – and hopefully prevent the negative consequences of stress by doing so,’ Gouin added. The paper was published in the journal Stress.

Here are some expert tips to reduce stress and keep your heart healthy

Decide to change your lifestyle: Somewhere down the line, we all know we need to change our lifestyle but we don’t act upon that thought. Think about what changes you need to make and target them one by one. Changing your lifestyle in a positive way can help you cope up with the expectations of people around you.

Eat a balanced diet: Good nutrition is a powerful weapon to deal with stress. Your nutrition requirement shoot up when you’re under stressful situation. 6 changes that take place in your breasts during pregnancy

pregnant womanDuring pregnancy, there are a lot of changes that happen within your body. In fact, every part of your body is affected in one way or the other. Your breasts also undergo a lot of changes in the process; some are painful, and some are minor changes that cause no harm. However, know that breast changes that happen during pregnancy have a purpose of their own. It is a sign that your body is preparing well in advance to meet with the breastfeeding demands of your baby after birth.  Here are a few noticeable changes that your breasts may go through.

Soreness

Not all women might experience this symptom, but it is common during pregnancy. Tender and sore breasts are the result of increased sensitivity in the area due to hormonal changes. These symptoms are more prominent during the first trimester of pregnancy than any other time during those nine months. Increased levels of estrogen and progesterone are responsible for the tenderness in the breasts. At times, it can be so severe that your breasts start to pain if brushed accidentally or when touched by your partner. Incidentally these symptoms cease when one enters the second trimester.

Increase in size

It is common for your breasts to increase in size during pregnancy with milk production in progress, and gearing up for lactation. However, remember that big, enlarged breasts are also going to be very sore and tender. Along with an increase in growth there are chances of developing stretch marks and itchiness in the area too. If you notice that your breasts are growing rapidly, make sure you use proper support bras to keep them firm and in place to avoid jerks and pain.

Appearence of veins

During pregnancy, your blood supply increases by 50 per cent to meet the growing demands of your body and that of your baby. This makes the veins more prominent and visible especially in the breast area and sometimes in the abdomen too. These veins become less noticeable post birth though.

Changes in nipples

While your breasts go through all these changes, your nipples also have to face the same fate. The areola and the nipples change in colour and become darker than usual. In fact, during the last few weeks of pregnancy the nipples and areola also grow in the size along with the breasts, as they prepare for the breastfeeding phase. Besides this, small bumps might also appear on the areolas that are harmless in nature. These are sebaceous glands that secrete oils to keep the breasts safe from bacterial infections.

Leaky breasts

Your breasts prepare for lactation as early as 16th week of your pregnancy. At times, this can also lead to leaky breasts that could in turn lead to a discharge of a milky yellowish substance called colostrum, the first feed for the baby. This is normal and happens to many women during pregnancy. However, in case of blood leaking from the breasts get it checked with your doctor. Remember leaking breasts do not mean that your baby’s milk supply would be compromised post birth.

Formation of lumps

Developing lumps in the breasts during pregnancy is also common. Some known causes that could lead to the development of these cysts are fibroadenoma, i.e., cysts formed from fibrous tissues and galactoses, cysts developed due to a blocked milk duct. These cysts are usually, benign. However, it is better to get it checked with the doctor once to rule out possibility of other medical complications.

Tips to take care of your breasts during pregnancy

Here is what you can do to keep your breasts well-protected during pregnancy:

  • Opt for well-fitting maternity bras that provide you with good support and would be gentle on sore breasts.

  • Try and avoid synthetic fabrics, satin and other designer undergarments that could cause friction in the skin. Avoid under-wired bras. Cotton maternity wear would be your best bet.

  • While going to bed, wear a cotton sleep bra for support.

  • Be careful and avoid knocking or brushing past things, especially if you have sore breasts. While lovemaking ask your partner to keep hands off your breasts if it hurts due to increased sensitivity.

  • Do a gentle massage to keep your breasts moisturised.

When should you worry

Picking up a problem or medical condition related to your breasts during pregnancy is tricky, as your breasts go through various changes. However, one cannot rule out the possibility of breast cancer or other tumor development during this time. If you find lumps in your breasts, get it checked by your doctor and go for further medical examinations if required. In fact, ask your doctor or health care professional for a breast examination during your antenatal visits.

Why are Americans more depressed today

depressionUS citizens are more depressed now than they have been in decades but most of them are not aware of their conditions, says a new study. Analysing data from 6.9 million adolescents and adults from all over the country, the study found that people in the US now report more psycho-somatic symptoms of depression, such as troubled sleep and trouble in concentrating, than their counterparts in the 1980s.

‘This study shows an increase in symptoms most people do not even know are connected to depression, which suggests adolescents and adults really are suffering more,’ said study author Jean M. Twenge from the San Diego State University in the US. Compared to their 1980s counterparts, teenagers in the 2010s are 38 percent more likely to have trouble remembering, 74 percent more likely to have trouble sleeping, and twice as likely to have seen a professional for mental health issues.

College students surveyed were 50 percent more likely to say they feel overwhelmed, and adults were more likely to say their sleep was restless, they had poor appetite and everything was an effort – all classic psycho-somatic symptoms of depression. ‘Despite all of these symptoms, people are not any more likely to say they are depressed when asked directly, again suggesting that the rise is not based on people being more willing to admit depression,’ Twenge pointed out.

The study appeared in the journal Social Indicators Research.

Here are 5 health conditions that can lead to depression

Heart diseases: It is a known fact that depression in young adults puts them at a higher risk of heart diseases in the later stages of their life. However studies have also found that an incidence of heart attack or other related cardiac troubles can also be a major cause of depression among many. Studies have found that about 70 per cent of patients who have undergone a heart attack suffer from depression till up to a year after the incidence. In fact, the effect of depression is so severe in such cases that it interferes with the functional ability of a patient, like returning back to previous pleasurable activities, posing a problem in one’s sexual capabilities and much more. Without proper treatment and medical attention such kind of depression is persistent among patients recovering from a heart attack. Read 5 vegetables you must eat for a healthy heart

Parkinson’s disease: It is noticed that around 30 to 40 per cent of patients suffering from Parkinson’s also suffer from severe symptoms of depression during the later stages of the condition. Depression is more common in those patients who suffer from bradykiensia and gait instability than in patients who suffer from tremors of the limbs. Read Parkinson’s disease: are you at a risk?

Multiple sclerosis: Depression is also common in patients suffering from a debilitating condition like multiple sclerosis. Prolonged depression in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis can also lead to suicidal tendencies. The silver lining is unlike the other symptoms of the condition, depression in MS is purely treatable if one reaches out for treatment at the right time. Can scorpion venom sting brain cancer?

brain-cancerScientists have received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to use ‘Tumour Paint’, a product derived from scorpion venom for study in human trials in the US, in an effort to treat people suffering from brain cancer. During the phase one trial, ‘Tumour Paint’ will be used on an estimated 21 people with a glioma, or tumour in the brain or spine, ABCNews.com reported.

The product was developed by US-based Blaze Bioscience, a company dedicated to developing products that assist physicians in their quest to improve the lives of cancer patients. ‘Tumour Paint’ is designed to ‘provide real-time, high-resolution intra-operative visualisation of cancer cells, enabling better detection and more complete and precise surgical removal of cancer’.

It is created by utilising a protein derived from the paralysing venom of an Israeli death-stalker scorpion.
The re-engineered protein, which binds to cancer cells, is then joined with a fluorescent molecule ‘flashlight’ that has been used safely in human surgeries for decades. ‘It is really hard to get molecules into the brain due to the blood-brain barrier,’ Jim Olsen, a brain cancer specialist at the Seattle Children’s Hospital who developed the product, was quoted as saying. ‘Most drugs that are made by the drug companies cannot penetrate that barrier. The scorpion has found a way to get these proteins in the brain,’ Olsen concluded.

What is brain cancer?

Brain cancer is relatively a rare type of cancer, but once initiated, can turn out to be fatal. It can arise in any part of the brain or may even spread from other nearby areas to the brain (metastasis). The exact cause for brain cancer is still not identified but some genetic and environmental factors supposedly initiate the disease. Experts have identified that presence of certain impaired genes of diseases like Li-Fraumeni syndrome, neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis and Turcot’s syndrome, may also be a contributing risk factor for the onset of brain cancer. A few general symptoms of brain cancer include headache, walking disability, seizures, hazy vision, memory loss and speech problems. CT scan and MRI help to diagnose the existence of brain tumor. Treatment often depends on the patients’ condition. However chemotherapy, targeted drug therapy or even radiation therapy are usually the line of choice for the physicians.

Latest Cancer Research: New test for early cancer detection

cancerEarly detection of cancer could now be as easy as a simple blood test. Researchers have found that this test may also eliminate the need for some types of biopsies and identify those more likely to develop cancer in the future. The test, called the ‘lymphocyte genome sensitivity’ (LGS) test, could detect some cancers earlier than ever before, the study noted.

‘The test could allow earlier cancer detection, helping to save people’s lives,’ said co-researcher Diana Anderson from University of Bradford in West Yorkshire, UK. To develop this test, the researchers took blood samples from a group of people that included healthy individuals, cancer patients and people believed to be at a higher risk than normal to develop cancer.

White blood cells (lymphocytes) in these samples were examined in a ‘comet test,’ by embedding the cells in a jelly-like substance, called agar, on a microscope slide.  In this test, damage to the genetic material (DNA) of the cells was caused by treatment with ultraviolet (UVA) light.  This damage was observed in the form of DNA pieces being pulled within the agar in an electric field toward the positive end of the field.

This caused a comet-like tail, and the longer the tail the more DNA damage.  In cancer patients, DNA-damaged tail responses remained high and in those people who might develop pre-cancerous diseases, tail responses were in between.  This means that people with cancer have DNA which is more easily damaged by UVA than other people, so the test shows the sensitivity to damage of all the genome in a cell.

The study appeared in The FASEB Journal.

Gorging on vitamin D won’t keep diabetes at bay

vitamin-dA new study has revealed that there is no substantial proof that vitamin D helps in preventing the development of type 2 diabetes in people. The study conducted by scientists at the University of Cambridge, challenge evidence from earlier observational studies which suggested that higher concentrations of circulating vitamin D might prevent type 2 diabetes.

The researchers found no association between different gene variants that control vitamin D levels and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Moreover, the study also examined the link between vitamin D status and several physiological characteristics of type 2 diabetes, such as glucose and glycated haemoglobin, and also found no evidence of a causative link.

Dr Nita Forouhi, at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, said that observational studies that show a strong and consistent higher risk of type 2 diabetes with lower levels of vitamin D might do so because they have thus far not been able to adequately control for distorting or confounding factors, such as physical activity levels, that may be related both to vitamin D levels and to the risk of type 2 diabetes. Further research is needed with both betterclinical trials and better observational studies with more precise measurement of important factors that might affect vitamin D and disease relationships, Forouhi added.

The study is published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal.

Here are 10 tips to prevent diabetes

1. Get your sugar levels checked: A lot of people have prediabetes (fasting sugar: 100-125 mg/dl) and are totally clueless about it. A blood sugar test will help you to understand whether you’re prediabetic and what are your chances of developing diabetes. If you get diagnosed with prediabetes, then you can take the right steps and prevent it from transforming into irreversible diabetes. Here are things you should know about prediabetes.

2. Change your lifestyle: Sometimes, small changes can make a huge difference. Lifestyle intervention for preventing diabetes is the best example for this. Several studies on diabetes prevention programme have proved that diabetes can be prevented effectively by giving up sedentary lifestyle and adopting healthier changes. Read more about sedentary lifestyle and diabetes risk.

3. Eat healthy: Eat a healthy diet that has low calories, especially low saturated fats. Trials have shown that fat intake should not exceed 30 percent of the total calorie intake, whereas saturated fats should be restricted to just 10 percent. Include more of vegetables, fresh fruits, whole grains, dairy products and sources of omega 3 fats. Also, increase your fibre intake. Read more about 10 tips to prevent diabetes

Have acne? Drink wine to get rid of it

Red wine and acneIf you have acne, here’s another reason to have some wine. According to a recent study published in the journal Dermatology and Therapy, resveratrol, a key antioxidant present in red wine, inhibits the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, have suggested that by combining resveratrol with the acne medication benzoyl peroxide, its ability to kill the bacteria is improved, which could translate into new effective treatment to deal with acne.

The lab findings have demonstrated that both the compounds attack the bacteria, propionibacterium acnes, in distinct ways. While resveratrol stops the formation of free radicals that cause tissue damage, benzoyl peroxide kills the acne bacteria with the help of free radicals. Dr Emma Taylor, the study’s first author and assistant clinical professor of medicine in dermatology said, ‘We firstly thought that opposite action of the two compounds would cancel out their antibacterial effects, but they didn’t. This study showed that a combination of an antioxidant and an oxidant may enhance the antibacterial activity and sustain it for a long time.’

The research team grew colonies of the acne bacteria and added different concentrations of benzoyl peroxide and resveratrol in combination and individually. They monitored the bacterial growth for 10 days and found that even though benzoyl peroxide killed the bacteria at all concentrations, the effect lasted for only 24 hours. Whereas, resveratrol was found to inhibit bacterial growth for a longer time, it failed to show potent bactericidal activity. Surprisingly, the combined effects of the two compounds showed potent antibacterial activity. Dr Jenny Kim, professor of clinical medicine in the division of dermatology at the Geffen School said, ‘It was like combining the best of both world to build a powerful attack on the acne bacteria.’

The researchers observed the antibacterial effect of resveratrol under a high-powered microscope and found that some bacterial cells lost their outer structure indicating that it can alter as well as weaken the bacterial structure. The human skin cells and blood cells were also cultured with the two compounds to determine their toxicity. The test results showed that benzoyl peroxide was more toxic than resveratrol, which is why topical application of medicine containing benzoyl peroxide causes redness and skin irritation. The study findings might lead to a development of an effective and safe topical therapy to get rid of acne.

Diagnose with Alzheimer’s? What to do when the worst has happened

alzheimer's diagnosis

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s can completely turn your world around and stop life as you have known it so far. It is normal to experience a plethora of emotions ranging from despair to apathetic resignation. The first step in coping with the difficult challenges that lie ahead for an Alzheimer’s patient is acknowledging the emotions that often accompany the diagnosis.

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that accounts for about 50 to 80% of all diagnosed cases. There are an estimated 44.4 million people with dementia all over the world. The distinct pathologies of Alzheimer’s involves progressive accumulation of plaques outside neurons (tiny cells within the brain that helps transmit signals from and to the body) and protein tangles inside the neurons. This invariably leads to the damage and destruction of neurons, resulting in typical symptoms such as memory loss and deterioration of other abilities.

Dealing with the roller-coaster of emotions

‘Alzheimer’s is a difficult diagnosis. ‘The patient will cycle through a wide range of emotions as he/she tries to process this information,’ says Dr. Robert Mathew, President of Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI), Trivandrum Chapter.

After you receive the grim diagnosis, you may feel numb, and unsure of the next steps to take and patients, usually, feel the following emotions.

  • Denial that you have this disease.

  • Depression about how your life will change, feeling overwhelmed and powerless to stop the changes that you know are to come.

  • Fear about how you and your family will be affected by the disease.

  • Relief that you’re finally able to identify what has been going on so far.

  • Resentment that you have to suffer this, and not someone else.

  • Isolation, or a feeling that no one else understands what you’re going through.

Here are some ways you can deal with these emotions

Take care of your emotions

The worst thing that you can do is to ignore your emotions and carry on as normal. Come to terms with reality and start to take care of yourselves so you can move forward and figure out how to live a positive life. It can be difficult to figure out exactly how to deal with confusing emotions, but make a commitment to be there for yourself and not let the disease rob you of your life.

‘Friends and family can be of significant help during this time,’ says Dr. Mathew. ‘Reach out to them.’

Apart from reaching out to loved ones, you can also use a combination of the following approaches.

  • Maintaining a journal where you write about your feelings.

  • Share your thoughts honestly and openly with others.

  • Find an early stage support group and actively engage with them.

  • Turn to a spiritual leader or counselor.

  • Continue to stay engaged and doing things that you love.

  • Take the time to mourn, grieve, and then move on.

Support groups

Alzheimer’s can make you feel abandoned and isolated; you may feel like no one else understands what you’re going through. Don’t wait for someone else to come forward and help you. You may have to reach out to others, and ask for help.

Early stage support groups are great to help a newly diagnosed patient deal with the intensity of their emotions. A good support network will give you practical advice and motivate you to carry on. You will feel connected to others who are going through the same thing as you, and you will also find a sense of community and purpose. Actively connect with others and help them as you help yourself.

Don’t shy away from questions

You may not be able to ask your doctor everything that you need to know about the disease the moment you receive the diagnosis. It is normal to leave the hospital shaken and unsure of what you need to know about the disease. Take all the time you need to absorb the information, and then sit and list down the questions that you might have and want to ask your doctor.

To help you out, here are some questions that you may want to ask your doctor:

  • How did you arrive at the diagnosis and what tests did you use?

  • What can I expect in the future regarding the progression of the disease?

  • What are the treatment options available?

  • Are there any clinical trials, advanced treatments, or alternative treatment options?

  • Who will manage my care at the hospital?

  • What facilities can I expect at the hospital?

  • Who will help my family cope with this diagnosis?

Alzheimer’s is a difficult diagnosis, but it need not stop you from living your life. We hope that the above tips will help you deal with the diagnosis.
