The only thing scary about store-bought Halloween costumes is that you might bore someone to death. Then there's the risk of mortification if someone shows up in the same outfit. Instead, customize your costume on the cheap and crank up your evil-genius mojo by harnessing your smartphone or tablet's built-in ghoulish potential. It'll take only a few minutes to make yourself look as if you have a gaping chest wound or as if someone blew a hole straight through you. Fraser Smeaton, the CEO of MorphCostumes, is the Dr. Frankenstein of gadget-inspired gore. He turns these creepy ideas into a monstrously good time.
Materials
Scissors, plastic wrap, masking tape, duct tape, white T-shirt
Create the See-Through Wound
1. Cut a circle that's slightly smaller than your tablet's screen into the front of a shirt. Cut a same-size hole in the back of the shirt. (But if your second device is a smartphone, make it proportionately smaller.) Fray the holes' edges, making sure the front-facing cameras on both devices can see out.
2. Link the two tablets with Face- Time or another video chatting app. Whatever the back device broadcasts, the front screen will show. Zoom in to fix perspective.
The Two-Device Option
Any two smart devices with Wi-Fi and front-facing cameras will do--for example, two tablets or a tablet plus a smartphone.
Secure the Disguise
1. To keep your device protected, encase it in plastic wrap.
2. Use masking tape to secure the wrap to the back of the device. Next cut four 6-inch strips of duct tape, and attach one end of each strip to the back of the wrapped device in all four corners.
3. Place the tablet inside the shirt--screen centered and visible through the hole--and press the free ends of the duct tape to the fabric. Aim for 2 inches of tape on the tablet and 4 on the shirt.
* If you're using two devices, repeat these steps with your second device on the back of the shirt.
How to Mix Up Fake Blood
Create your own gore by sprinkling the shirt and areas around the "wound," or see-through hole, with our homemade fake blood.
DIRECTIONS: In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup corn syrup, 1 tsp red food coloring, and 1 Tbsp cocoa powder, stirring until smooth. Thin with water as needed. You want the consistency of maple syrup. Avoid oozing on others, it takes a few minutes to dry.
