Ebola in US: Ebola patient was earlier sent home due to hospital miscommunication

Ebola VirusThe US CDC Tuesday confirmed a patient travelling from Liberia in Texas to be diagnosed with Ebola. The patient, whose identity and nationality has not been revealed yet, is the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States. According to reports, the patient initially told a nurse he had travelled in Africa but was sent home anyway, which raises concerns about US preparedness for the spread of the deadly virus.

An official from the hospital mentioned that there was a miscommunication among hospital staff and therefore the patient was sent home. However, after leaving the hospital man came in contact with open community four days, and he even came in contact with schoolchildren before he was finally isolated in a hospital, officials said Wednesday. ‘I know that parents are being extremely concerned about that development,’ said Texas Governor Rick Perry.

‘These children have been identified and they are being monitored and the disease cannot be transmitted before having any symptoms.’  He arrived in Texas on September 20 and did not exhibit symptoms until September 24, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention chief Tom Frieden said Tuesday. He sought medical care on the 26th, but was sent home because the medical team ‘felt clinically it was a low-grade common viral disease,’ said Mark Lester, executive vice president of Texas Health Resources.

‘He volunteered that he had travelled from Africa in response to the nurse operating the checklist and asking that question,’ Lester added. ‘Regretfully, that information was not fully communicated throughout the full team.’  He was returned via ambulance to the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas on September 28, and was placed in strict isolation.

The patient is currently in serious but stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. The incubation period for Ebola is between two and 21 days. Patients are not contagious until they start to show signs of fever, aches, vomiting and diarrhea. As US officials scrambled to track down people the man encountered while sick, the worldwide death toll from Ebola jumped higher, to 3,338 dead and 7,178 infected since the beginning of the year, the World Health Organization said.

Meanwhile, the United Nations announced its first suspected victim of Ebola, a Liberian man who worked for the UN mission in Liberia and died of a probable but unconfirmed Ebola infection last week. In response to the fast-moving outbreak, the World Bank boosted its aid to the campaign by adding 170 million toward expanding the health-care workforce and buying needed supplies for care and treatment.

Here are some preventive measures for people who cannot avoid traveling.

  • If you’re taking medication for any infectious diseases and if you’re currently suffering from viral flu, you should avoid traveling before complete recovery. When you’re suffering from an infection, your immunity weakens. This could be a good opportunity for the virus to attack you.

  • Older people, young peers and pregnant women should not travel at all. They have a high risk of acquiring infection.

  • Those who are traveling should be extra careful about their diet. Eat a balanced diet. Avoid junk food and under-cooked food, especially meat.

Following precautionary measures for travelers.

  • In any case, avoid handling items that you suspect have been contaminated, especially blood or body fluids.

  • Avoid contact with other people and avoid visiting hospitals where treatment for Ebola is being given. Read more about Ebola Virus Travel Tips — Precautions you should take

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan to set up health camps at Ram Lila

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan addresses press at Patna Airport on June 20, 2014. (Photo: IANS)Every year, thousands of people gather to watch traditional enactment of Ramyana during Navratri festival. The health ministry identifies this traditional event as an opportunity to improve health in India. Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Wednesday revealed that this year Ram Lila would be linked with regular health checkups. The minister said that the camps will be set up at five locations during the ongoing festival, involving community health volunteers.

This would be done under Swasth Chetna Evam Jan Sahyog Abhiyaan (SCEJSA), which will be the first government initiative to draw people into the benefits of promotive and preventive health in the national capital. ‘SCEJSA camps have been opened at five big Ram Lila grounds and a Durga Puja mandap in Chittaranjan Park during the festive season. I urge all to avail this opportunity to get themselves checked by doctors from the leading hospitals of Delhi, and also avail free diagnostics and secondary treatment opportunities,’ said Harsh Vardhan.

The locations of the shivirs are: Luv-Kush Ram Lila at Lal Quila Maidan, Sri Balaji Ram Lila at CBD ground Karkardooma; Ram Lila Ground, Trinagar (Keshavpuram); Shalimar Bagh, near BL Block; and Ram Lila Ground in Ashok Vihar Phase 1 (near Dhyan Chand Stadium). The health ministry, in a statement, said: ‘More than 50 lakh people participate in the Ram Lila celebrations during the 10-day-long Navratri period’. In all, 26 doctors, 90 paramedics/nurses and more than 200 volunteers are involved in SCEJSA. They have been drawn from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and various hospitals of the Delhi government.

‘This is one of the ways a social movement around health should ideally work. We are finalizing a broader strategy, which will be discussed with the health secretaries of the states Oct 9. The gains from SCEJSA, in terms of experience, would serve as inputs for modelling a nation-wide health movement involving all stakeholders,’ he said.

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan encourages people to donate blood

Dr Harsh VardhanUnion Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Wednesday announced the government’s initiative, a nationwide social movement, to encourage people to donate blood, on the occasion of the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day.

The movement is aimed at bridging the gap between the demand and supply of blood. While addressing more than 2,000 school children and other volunteers he said, ‘We have a shortfall of 2-3 million units per year in India. Through more voluntarism we can easily make up the deficit. Till date, 84 percent of the requirement of safe blood has been fulfilled. We must take it to 100 percent soon.’

Highlighting the benefits of blood donation he said, ‘By donating a unit of blood a year a person can get more blessings than by going to a place of worship’. He also highlighted that donating blood does not cause deteriorate of heath and is in fact helps improve one’s health condition. It secures a person from heart attacks and cancer. It is a good way of burning calories and moreover gives the supreme satisfaction of saving lives, he added.

The minister also flagged a rally with the theme: ‘Run for the Little Red Dot Power’ at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to create awareness about blood donation. The rally comprised volunteers from different educational institutions, NSS volunteers, regular repeat voluntary blood donors, voluntary blood organisations and blood bank officers promoting the cause of voluntary blood donation.

Ebola in Liberia: US deploys 700 soldiers to combat Ebola

ebola virusUS Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has authorised the deployment of 700 soldiers to Liberia to help with the fight against the Ebola epidemic there, the Defence Department said in a statement Wednesday.

The troops will be deployed in late October to supervise the construction of Ebola treatment units, conduct site surveys and provide engineering expertise in an area with a range of infrastructure repair needs, Xinhua reported.

Last week, 15 construction-specialty sailors from the US Army arrived in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, to offer engineering support to the Operation United Assistance, conducting site surveys for future hospitals, and supply storage and training facilities for health care workers.

The deployments are part of a whole-of-government response to the Ebola outbreak, according to the statement. About 195 Defence Department personnel are now in west Africa, and over the last weekend the equipment for a 25-bed hospital and two mobile labs arrived in Monrovia.

The hospital will be in operation around mid-October, the statement said, adding that US military personnel are not and will not be providing direct care to Ebola patients.

Educate yourself about Ebola: Knowing the symptoms, modes of transmission and preventive measures is the first step to prevent the spread of the disease. This information is especially important for those who are travelling to and from affected areas in West Africa.   (Read: Has the Ebola virus really come to India?)

Maintain sanitary conditions: Basic hygiene plays a very important role in preventing Ebola. The exact way by which the virus enters the body is still debatable but skin and eyes are suggested routes for viral entry. However, food and water may also serve as source of entry. So, simple acts like washing hands before eating and disinfecting surfaces and covering the mouth can help prevent the spread of the virus, especially in areas surrounding the areas of outbreak.   (Read: Ebola Facts: Top 7 myths busted)

Avoid contact with blood and body fluids:  Ebola virus spreads through all body fluids including blood, semen, saliva, sweat, urine, fecal matter and vomit of infected individuals. Healthcare workers and medical staff who are more likely to come in contact with infected body fluids, infected needles and first aid, should handle them with protective gear. Latest Ebola News: Death toll in Congo reaches 42

Ebola virusDemocratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) Minister of Public Health Felix Kabange confirmed Wednesday a total 42 people have lost their lives to Ebola virus disease in confirmed or suspected cases.

Out of 42, a total 30 cases were confirmed Ebola positive, out of which 16 died, two remain in isolation, and 12 are healed. Other deaths are suspected and probable cases, Xinhua reported citing the minister.

Kabange said that 243 people were being monitored among the 245 who had been in contact with Ebola patients. ‘The dead include eight health workers and three isolation cases, all in the Equateur province,’ he added. With the first case confirmed in mid-August, DRC is experiencing its seventh Ebola outbreak since 1976.

Here are a few reasons Ebola virus is deadly

It can kill within seven days: Unlike other viruses (like HIV) that can remain dormant in a person for years without causing the disease, Ebola violently multiplies until the viral particles are amplified to about 100 million viral particles in a droplet of blood. Further, without resting in a dormant stage the virus kills the host to find a new one. The fatality rate of the disease is 60 percent.

There is no vaccine or treatment available: What makes this virus deadly is the fact that researchers have not been able to find an effective treatment or preventive technique to combat the virus and the spread of the disease. The experimental drug Zmapp has shown promising results but the safety and efficacy of the drug are to be evaluated. So, as of now, neither do we have an effective form of therapy nor do we have a vaccine to prevent the disease.

Attacks every part of the human body: Ebola only needs a host cell that can help it produce multiple copies of itself. What worsens the condition is the fact that the virus does not need a specific type of cell to multiply (unlike other deadly diseases). According to studies, except for skeletal muscles and bones, the virus is known to infect every part of the human body. Connective tissues, the ones that hold your internal organs in place, are primary targets of the virus.

Why a steady heartbeat is bad for you

stressAccording to a recent study, if a person has a steady heartbeat when he is worried about something than he might be more susceptible to stress. The research conducted by the Concordia University showed that a less variable heartbeat when worried makes a person highly stressed later on.

‘At rest, a more variable heartbeat is a good thing. It shows that your parasympathetic nervous system is hard at work. That is the system that is responsible for the ‘rest-and-digest’ state of being – the opposite of ‘fight-or-flight’,’ explained psychology professor Jean-Philippe Gouin. The rest-and-digest phase puts you in a calm state that allows you to conserve and replenish your energy. During the study, Gouin followed 76 university students during periods of lower stress at the beginning of term and higher stress during the exam period. He found that, although all students experience similar challenges during finals, only some of them develop significant distress.

Researchers recorded participants’ heart rate variability while they were relaxing and while they were thinking about things they tend to worry about most. They also tracked participants’ moods at low stress and high stress periods during term. ‘By pinpointing those in the general population who are most vulnerable to stress, we can intervene before they hit the breaking point – and hopefully prevent the negative consequences of stress by doing so,’ Gouin added. The paper was published in the journal Stress.

Here are some expert tips to reduce stress and keep your heart healthy

Decide to change your lifestyle: Somewhere down the line, we all know we need to change our lifestyle but we don’t act upon that thought. Think about what changes you need to make and target them one by one. Changing your lifestyle in a positive way can help you cope up with the expectations of people around you.

Eat a balanced diet: Good nutrition is a powerful weapon to deal with stress. Your nutrition requirement shoot up when you’re under stressful situation. Your body needs extra B vitamins, vitamin C and zinc for building resistance against infections. Eat a balanced diet, with adequate amount of complex carbohydrates that keep you energised for a long time and prevent mindless eating along with proteins and healthy fats. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables to meet your nutritional requirement.

Exercise regularly: Physical activity releases stress-busting hormones that induces a feeling of relaxation and keeps you happy. Even 30 minutes of daily exercise will be sufficient for reducing stress. It will also reduce cholesterol and increase your heart rate, improving heart function. Why are Americans more depressed today

depressionUS citizens are more depressed now than they have been in decades but most of them are not aware of their conditions, says a new study. Analysing data from 6.9 million adolescents and adults from all over the country, the study found that people in the US now report more psycho-somatic symptoms of depression, such as troubled sleep and trouble in concentrating, than their counterparts in the 1980s.

‘This study shows an increase in symptoms most people do not even know are connected to depression, which suggests adolescents and adults really are suffering more,’ said study author Jean M. Twenge from the San Diego State University in the US. Compared to their 1980s counterparts, teenagers in the 2010s are 38 percent more likely to have trouble remembering, 74 percent more likely to have trouble sleeping, and twice as likely to have seen a professional for mental health issues.

College students surveyed were 50 percent more likely to say they feel overwhelmed, and adults were more likely to say their sleep was restless, they had poor appetite and everything was an effort – all classic psycho-somatic symptoms of depression. ‘Despite all of these symptoms, people are not any more likely to say they are depressed when asked directly, again suggesting that the rise is not based on people being more willing to admit depression,’ Twenge pointed out.

The study appeared in the journal Social Indicators Research.

Here are 5 health conditions that can lead to depression

Heart diseases: It is a known fact that depression in young adults puts them at a higher risk of heart diseases in the later stages of their life. However studies have also found that an incidence of heart attack or other related cardiac troubles can also be a major cause of depression among many. Studies have found that about 70 per cent of patients who have undergone a heart attack suffer from depression till up to a year after the incidence. In fact, the effect of depression is so severe in such cases that it interferes with the functional ability of a patient, like returning back to previous pleasurable activities, posing a problem in one’s sexual capabilities and much more. Without proper treatment and medical attention such kind of depression is persistent among patients recovering from a heart attack. Read 5 vegetables you must eat for a healthy heart

Parkinson’s disease: It is noticed that around 30 to 40 per cent of patients suffering from Parkinson’s also suffer from severe symptoms of depression during the later stages of the condition. Depression is more common in those patients who suffer from bradykiensia and gait instability than in patients who suffer from tremors of the limbs. Read Parkinson’s disease: are you at a risk?

Multiple sclerosis: Depression is also common in patients suffering from a debilitating condition like multiple sclerosis. Prolonged depression in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis can also lead to suicidal tendencies. The silver lining is unlike the other symptoms of the condition, depression in MS is purely treatable if one reaches out for treatment at the right time. Can scorpion venom sting brain cancer?

brain-cancerScientists have received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to use ‘Tumour Paint’, a product derived from scorpion venom for study in human trials in the US, in an effort to treat people suffering from brain cancer. During the phase one trial, ‘Tumour Paint’ will be used on an estimated 21 people with a glioma, or tumour in the brain or spine, ABCNews.com reported.

The product was developed by US-based Blaze Bioscience, a company dedicated to developing products that assist physicians in their quest to improve the lives of cancer patients. ‘Tumour Paint’ is designed to ‘provide real-time, high-resolution intra-operative visualisation of cancer cells, enabling better detection and more complete and precise surgical removal of cancer’.

It is created by utilising a protein derived from the paralysing venom of an Israeli death-stalker scorpion.
The re-engineered protein, which binds to cancer cells, is then joined with a fluorescent molecule ‘flashlight’ that has been used safely in human surgeries for decades. ‘It is really hard to get molecules into the brain due to the blood-brain barrier,’ Jim Olsen, a brain cancer specialist at the Seattle Children’s Hospital who developed the product, was quoted as saying. ‘Most drugs that are made by the drug companies cannot penetrate that barrier. The scorpion has found a way to get these proteins in the brain,’ Olsen concluded.

What is brain cancer?

Brain cancer is relatively a rare type of cancer, but once initiated, can turn out to be fatal. It can arise in any part of the brain or may even spread from other nearby areas to the brain (metastasis). The exact cause for brain cancer is still not identified but some genetic and environmental factors supposedly initiate the disease. Experts have identified that presence of certain impaired genes of diseases like Li-Fraumeni syndrome, neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis and Turcot’s syndrome, may also be a contributing risk factor for the onset of brain cancer. A few general symptoms of brain cancer include headache, walking disability, seizures, hazy vision, memory loss and speech problems. CT scan and MRI help to diagnose the existence of brain tumor. Treatment often depends on the patients’ condition. However chemotherapy, targeted drug therapy or even radiation therapy are usually the line of choice for the physicians.

Latest Cancer Research: New test for early cancer detection

cancerEarly detection of cancer could now be as easy as a simple blood test. Researchers have found that this test may also eliminate the need for some types of biopsies and identify those more likely to develop cancer in the future. The test, called the ‘lymphocyte genome sensitivity’ (LGS) test, could detect some cancers earlier than ever before, the study noted.

‘The test could allow earlier cancer detection, helping to save people’s lives,’ said co-researcher Diana Anderson from University of Bradford in West Yorkshire, UK. To develop this test, the researchers took blood samples from a group of people that included healthy individuals, cancer patients and people believed to be at a higher risk than normal to develop cancer.

White blood cells (lymphocytes) in these samples were examined in a ‘comet test,’ by embedding the cells in a jelly-like substance, called agar, on a microscope slide.  In this test, damage to the genetic material (DNA) of the cells was caused by treatment with ultraviolet (UVA) light.  This damage was observed in the form of DNA pieces being pulled within the agar in an electric field toward the positive end of the field.

This caused a comet-like tail, and the longer the tail the more DNA damage.  In cancer patients, DNA-damaged tail responses remained high and in those people who might develop pre-cancerous diseases, tail responses were in between.  This means that people with cancer have DNA which is more easily damaged by UVA than other people, so the test shows the sensitivity to damage of all the genome in a cell.

The study appeared in The FASEB Journal.

Gorging on vitamin D won’t keep diabetes at bay

vitamin-dA new study has revealed that there is no substantial proof that vitamin D helps in preventing the development of type 2 diabetes in people. The study conducted by scientists at the University of Cambridge, challenge evidence from earlier observational studies which suggested that higher concentrations of circulating vitamin D might prevent type 2 diabetes.

The researchers found no association between different gene variants that control vitamin D levels and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Moreover, the study also examined the link between vitamin D status and several physiological characteristics of type 2 diabetes, such as glucose and glycated haemoglobin, and also found no evidence of a causative link.

Dr Nita Forouhi, at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, said that observational studies that show a strong and consistent higher risk of type 2 diabetes with lower levels of vitamin D might do so because they have thus far not been able to adequately control for distorting or confounding factors, such as physical activity levels, that may be related both to vitamin D levels and to the risk of type 2 diabetes. Further research is needed with both betterclinical trials and better observational studies with more precise measurement of important factors that might affect vitamin D and disease relationships, Forouhi added.

The study is published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal.

Here are 10 tips to prevent diabetes

1. Get your sugar levels checked: A lot of people have prediabetes (fasting sugar: 100-125 mg/dl) and are totally clueless about it. A blood sugar test will help you to understand whether you’re prediabetic and what are your chances of developing diabetes. If you get diagnosed with prediabetes, then you can take the right steps and prevent it from transforming into irreversible diabetes. Here are things you should know about prediabetes.

2. Change your lifestyle: Sometimes, small changes can make a huge difference. Lifestyle intervention for preventing diabetes is the best example for this. Several studies on diabetes prevention programme have proved that diabetes can be prevented effectively by giving up sedentary lifestyle and adopting healthier changes. Read more about sedentary lifestyle and diabetes risk.

3. Eat healthy: Eat a healthy diet that has low calories, especially low saturated fats. Trials have shown that fat intake should not exceed 30 percent of the total calorie intake, whereas saturated fats should be restricted to just 10 percent. Include more of vegetables, fresh fruits, whole grains, dairy products and sources of omega 3 fats. Also, increase your fibre intake. Read more about 10 tips to prevent diabetes

Have acne? Drink wine to get rid of it

Red wine and acneIf you have acne, here’s another reason to have some wine. According to a recent study published in the journal Dermatology and Therapy, resveratrol, a key antioxidant present in red wine, inhibits the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, have suggested that by combining resveratrol with the acne medication benzoyl peroxide, its ability to kill the bacteria is improved, which could translate into new effective treatment to deal with acne.

The lab findings have demonstrated that both the compounds attack the bacteria, propionibacterium acnes, in distinct ways. While resveratrol stops the formation of free radicals that cause tissue damage, benzoyl peroxide kills the acne bacteria with the help of free radicals. Dr Emma Taylor, the study’s first author and assistant clinical professor of medicine in dermatology said, ‘We firstly thought that opposite action of the two compounds would cancel out their antibacterial effects, but they didn’t. This study showed that a combination of an antioxidant and an oxidant may enhance the antibacterial activity and sustain it for a long time.’

The research team grew colonies of the acne bacteria and added different concentrations of benzoyl peroxide and resveratrol in combination and individually. They monitored the bacterial growth for 10 days and found that even though benzoyl peroxide killed the bacteria at all concentrations, the effect lasted for only 24 hours. Whereas, resveratrol was found to inhibit bacterial growth for a longer time, it failed to show potent bactericidal activity. Surprisingly, the combined effects of the two compounds showed potent antibacterial activity. Dr Jenny Kim, professor of clinical medicine in the division of dermatology at the Geffen School said, ‘It was like combining the best of both world to build a powerful attack on the acne bacteria.’

The researchers observed the antibacterial effect of resveratrol under a high-powered microscope and found that some bacterial cells lost their outer structure indicating that it can alter as well as weaken the bacterial structure. The human skin cells and blood cells were also cultured with the two compounds to determine their toxicity. The test results showed that benzoyl peroxide was more toxic than resveratrol, which is why topical application of medicine containing benzoyl peroxide causes redness and skin irritation. The study findings might lead to a development of an effective and safe topical therapy to get rid of acne.

Aamir Khan agrees to drop the transistor for Hrithik Roshan’s Bang Bang Dare

aamir-khan-pkThe ongoing Bang Bang Dare by Hrithik Roshan took a rather interesting turn when Hrithik dared Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan. The actor who made headlines with his semi-nude poster of PK, with only a transistor covering his modesty, has been asked to drop that too and go full Monty.

‘By POPULAR DEMAND! today’s #bangbangdare goes 2 d man himself THE PK! @aamir_khan! Your dare is -” PUT THE TRANSISTOR DOWN!!” Nahin karoge to punishment milega! Who bhi bangbang style mein! Kya bolte ho logon? ACCEPT?? @aamir_khan,’ read Hrithik’s tweet.

Aamir once said in an interview about his fitness, ‘What should I say…a lot of it has to do with my genes, and I always eat healthy. I stay conscious about what I eat.’ Be it Dhoom 3, Ghajni or PK, the actor really goes under the skin of the character to look the part.

His former trainer Satyajit Chaurasia, had said, ‘Before Three Idiots, he had said to me that his body feels like the Taj Mahal, and now I would have to break it down.  But, by now, Aamir’s body is flexible enough to mould into any shape or size. Of course, his dedication to get it absolutely bang on is commendable.’

It will be a treat for his fans to see some more of his ripped body.

Peanuts may no longer cause allergies

peanutAllergic to peanuts? You may soon start eating them without being worried about allergic symptoms. Scientists have now found a unique way to render peanuts devoid of allergens.

In a study published in the journal Food and Bioprocess Technology, researchers used a specific technique to remove allergens present in peanuts, making it allergy-free. The techniques uses pulses of ultraviolet light or pulsating light system generated using two lamps filled with xenon, two cooling blowers, one treatment chamber with a conveyor belt and a control module – to direct concentrated bursts of light to eliminate the peanut allergens proteins.

The technique successfully removed 80 per cent of allergic proteins present in peanuts. According to the researchers the technique could eventually eliminate 99.9 per cent of peanut allergens. Peanut allergens must be eliminated below a certain threshold for patients to be safe, said Wade Yang, an assistant professor in food science and human nutrition and member of University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

If Yang can cut the allergens from 150 milligrams of protein per peanut to below 1.5 milligrams, 95 per cent of those with peanut allergies would be safe. It’s challenging to eliminate all peanut allergens, Yang said, because doing so may risk destroying peanuts’ texture, colour, flavour and nutrition. But Yang said he is using novel methods like pulsed light to reach an allergen level that will protect most people.

Yang, however, cautioned that he has done peanut allergen experiments only in a laboratory setting so far. He hopes to eventually conduct clinical trials on animals and humans.

In the study, Yang and his colleagues applied the pulsed ultraviolet light technology to whole peanuts. That makes the findings more useful, because peanut processing usually starts from whole-peanut roasting, and roasted peanuts are then packaged to sell as whole peanuts or made into peanut butter, Yang said.

Ranbir Kapoor discharged after undergoing surgery for infected tonsils

ranbir-kapoorActor Ranbir Kapoor was discharged from a hospital following a minor surgery, said a source. According to a report, he was being treated for adenoid tonsil. Ranbir, who turned 32 on Sep 28, was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai. ‘He was hospitalised…and he got discharged today morning. It was just a minor surgery, nothing serious,’ an official from the facility, told IANS.

If a report is to be believed, the adenoid tonsil had been troubling Ranbir for a while, due to which he had to sometimes sleep with his mouth open to ease breathing.

Why did he need the surgery?

According to reports the  actor was suffering from difficulty breathing through his nose as he slept, which led to the inflammation of his adenoids and tonsils. The inflammation subsequently became worse and therefore they had to be removed.

What are adenoids and tonsils?

Adenoids is a small mass of tissue present at the back of your throat, at the end of your nasal passage. This mass of tissue is essential to help children beat infections and is usually present during a child’s formative years. The adenoids then shrink as the child grows and is usually much smaller in adults.

Your tonsils are a mass of lymphatic tissue present at the beginning of your throat, just where your tongue enters the throat.

In some people these adenoids get enlarged and make it difficult for them to breathe through their mouth. When these adenoids get inflamed it leads to the inflammation of the tonsils too. The common symptoms of enlarged adenoids and tonsils are; having a stuffy nose, inability to breathe through your nose especially when you are lying down, snoring, sore throat, trouble swallowing food, ear ache and swollen glands in the neck that can be felt with by feeling over the area just below the jaw.

Beware, viagra could affect your vision

visionAccording to a new research published in the journal Experimental Eye Research, medicines like Viagra that are used to treat erectile dysfunction can dangerously affect vision of susceptible users.

The study, carried out by researchers at University of New South Wales, revealed that sildenafil, the active ingredient present in erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, inhibits the action of an enzyme that is important for transmitting light signals from the retina to the brain. When used in high doses, the drug can lead to disturbances in the vision in healthy individuals.

According to researcher Lisa Nivison-Smith, side effects of the drug can include sensitivity to bright light, blurred vision and altered colour vision and people who have normal vision but those who carry a single copy of the mutant gene for the blinding disease, Retinitis Pigmentosa, could be more susceptible to these changes.

The study showed that the normal mice had a transient loss of visual function after sildenafil treatment, but this effect was heightened in the mice with the mutation, and the response lasted longer.

The researchers also found early signs of cell death in the eyes of carrier mice, but not in the normal mice, suggesting sildenafil may cause degeneration in carriers of retinal disease.

Nivison-Smith added that a better understanding of the effect of this family of erectile dysfunction drugs could help scientists and clinicians plan more successful strategies to account for factors such as a patient’s medication and genetic makeup in diseases which cause blindness.

Beware, smoking marijuana at early age can weaken your immunity in adulthood

marijuanaAccording to a new research published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, smoking marijuana early in life can trigger immune-related diseases in adulthood.

The study, carried out by a team of researchers from the Universita degli Studi di Milano, treated adolescent mice with a chemical called Tetrahydrocannabino (THC) that is found in cannabis. It was found that later in adulthood these mice developed serious alterations in immune responses due to a switch towards a pro-inflammatory and cytotoxic phenotype.

According to researcher Paola Sacerdote increased risk of falling sick in adulthood may be traced back to marijuana abuse among individuals in their adolescent years. Using marijuana in adolescence may cause serious long-term damage to the immune system, which may result in autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammatory diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis in adulthood.

The immune system has an impressive ability to memorise previous exposures and changes that take place during the period of immune system development, especially those taking place early in life. Editor According to editor John Wherry these changes can have important long-term consequences. Wherry added that these studies not only point to adolescence as a key phase of immune system sensitivity, but also highly the dramatic and long-lasting negative effects that a common recreational drug abused by teenagers may have on immune function. Hrithik Roshan shares tips to overcome rejection, failure and disappointment in life

HrithikHe overcame stammering; witnessed his father’s failure as an actor and producer and his surviving a gunshot wound; saw his sister battle cancer; underwent a near fatal brain surgery; and has faced a broken marriage with his childhood sweetheart. Yet, Hrithik Roshan calls his journey a ‘fairy tale’ and says it is life’s adversities that build a man’s ‘mental muscle’.

One look at the actor’s washboard abs and chiselled physique in his forthcoming film ‘Bang Bang’, and you can guess the strenuous gym routines he must’ve followed. But during a telephonic chat with IANS, the 40-year-old son of filmmaker Rakesh Roshan spoke of his learnings via another ‘workout’. ‘Mental muscle can only be built in times of adversity – when you’re going through a struggle, pain or a suffering. Remember that’s your opportunity, that’s your gym to work out. Just as you go to the gym to work out on your body, an adversity is the gym for the mind.

‘That’s the time you have to build your mental muscle by disciplining yourself, by focussing on your actions and by not sitting for more than 10 minutes to think ‘Why is life so unfair?’ Then you have to snap out of it,’ said the actor as he gave out his ‘tools and rules’ of living life the way he now does – with focus, discipline and by challenging the impossibilities. The past year has been a physical, mental and emotional roller-coaster for Hrithik, but tiding over the ups and downs, he has upped the ante for action in Bollywood with ‘Bang Bang’.

Hrithik, whose ‘Bang Bang’ releases Thursday, a day before the festival of Dusshera, believes man’s biggest demon is his ‘own mind’. ‘What you think is impossible, is just that Raavan in your mind. You’ll have to kill that demon to focus on other people and towards contribution to the world,’ said the actor.

Hrithik, whose Greek god looks, flexible dance moves and versatile acting have enthralled Bollywood viewers for almost 15 years now, feels he has found the key to a happy life. ‘It’s a journey. But once you learn to trick your mind, then you always have the right tools and right rules to live by,’ said the actor, who feels responsible to teach youth and children to face bad times, rejection and impossibilities with a bang!

‘I think that’s something I feel very responsible towards. Knowing the struggles I’ve been through and looking at where I am today, it’s such a large paradox that it sounds like a fairytale. It sounds unreal. But if I can do it, I also want my children to know that it’s possible,’ he said. Apart from his acting career, imparting his learnings and sharing them with the world form a major part of his focus now. ‘I don’t know how…but I will do it through my brand HRX, in time. I have built this brand, and life will show me a way because I will keep on trying,’ he said.

World Vegetarian Day 2014 — health benefits of a vegetarian diet

vegeterian

October 1 is World Vegetarian Day.

Vegetarian diet is one that does not include meat, poultry and fish. It mainly includes cereals, pulses, legumes, milk and milk products, fruits, vegetables and nuts. Data suggests that vegetarians are at a lower risk of hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, obesity and heart disease as compared to non-vegetarians. This is because of low saturated fat intake and high-fibre content.

However, a vegetarian diet consisting of fried foods, refined products and whole milk dairy products will increase the overall fat content and reduce the amount of fibre. Therefore, careful diet planning which includes all the food groups in the right proportion is the key to a healthy vegetarian lifestyle.

Let’s take a look at how a vegetarian diet helps tackle most of our health problems:

Reduces obesity risk: Vegetarian diet is plant-based which is high in complex carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals that stimulate metabolism. It is low in fat, delays hunger pangs and makes for a healthy diet.

Reduces risk of diabetes: Whole grains and legumes have been are a staple of vegetarian diet. These foods are less processed and therefore, they have good amount of fibre and low glycemic index. Foods with low glycemic index raise the blood glucose levels slowly and thus, prevent sudden spike. Low glycemic index foods include wheat, jowar, bajra, dalia, barley, oats, brown rice, pulses and legumes.

Reduces high blood pressure: A diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products and decreased intake of meat helps in controlling blood pressure. Such a diet is rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium and fibre and low in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol which helps in keeping blood pressure within normal range.

How to eat a healthy vegetarian meal

  • Include whole gains and pulses with low glycemic index and high-fibre content.

  • Reduce the intake of refined products such as white bread, pasta, noodles, refined sugar and sugary products.

  • Include at least 2 servings of seasonal fresh fruits and 5 servings of fresh vegetables daily. These different fruits and vegetables do not just enhance the appearance of food but they are also rich in vitamins and minerals.

  • Improve the quality of protein by including cereal-pulse combination in the diet such as idli, dosa, cereal-pulse mix pancakes, khichdi, dal pulao, dal paratha, etc. Also include soy and tofu which are excellent sources of vegetarian protein.

  • Eat nuts such as almonds and walnuts daily. They too are a good source of protein and healthy fat which is required by our body.

  • Include low-fat dairy products such as milk, curd, buttermilk and paneer as they are a good source of calcium and protein too. Include at least 2 servings of milk and 2 servings of curd daily.

Keira Knightley not worried about ageing

Keira KnightleyActress Keira Knightley says she isn’t scared of getting older as her ‘early twenties were not much fun’. In an interview with Glamour magazine, the 29-year-old shared her views about ageing and said she was looking forward to her next big birthday,’ reports dailymail.co.uk.  The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star will turn 30 March 26.

‘I’m not actually worried about turning 30. Because, honestly, my early twenties were not much fun. Then after 25, things just got better and better,’ she said.  ‘Maybe you stop caring as much about where you should be going and what other people think – which is all the s**t that makes you very unhappy early on,’ she added.  The actress, who got married to Klaxons rocker James Righton May 2013, also admitted that being married doesn’t make her feel grown-up.

‘Actually, I feel less grown-up as I go along. I reached my peak of grown-up behaviour at 20 and 21, and it’s been downhill since then,’ she said. ‘I was terribly sensible as a teenager but I’ve got far less so as I’ve grown up, which has been a huge relief for everyone – including my parents,’ she added.
