5 Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Watch Wardrobe

There’s no wrong or right way to wear a watch. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal taste and the image you’re trying to project. That said, there are a few basics that any watch enthusiast should keep in mind.

1. Think about the occasion
No style aficionado should be limited to a single timepiece. Are you spending a Saturday in the studio? Running a marathon? Giving a presentation? Attending a gala? Though a good first watch should be relatively suitable for both everyday use and dressier affairs, let’s face it: You’ve evolved.

Most timepieces were designed to excel in certain circumstances. Are there more digital features than you can count on two hands? Your watch is best suited for an adventure. Is there a perpetual calendar and a solid gold case? Break it out for a special occasion. Don’t be afraid to make a statement.

2. Get your strap or bracelet sized to fit
A general rule of thumb: If it’s possible that a friendly gesture might send your watch flying across the room, your strap or bracelet needs to be tightened. It should neither hang off your wrist nor be so tight that it leaves impressions in your skin. Remember, too, that your wrist will expand in the heat and contract in the cold. Make sure you’re comfortable, no matter the season–the better you feel, the more confidence you’ll project.

3. Ask yourself: Is my watch wound? Has the battery died?
Be sure you’re not about to lead a boardroom discussion on Wednesday when your watch says it’s Tuesday. Though we’re all able to check the time on our phones these days, a stopped watch is even less useful than a bracelet.

4. Pay attention to case size
Watch dials these days tend to err toward the oversized, but it’s possible to go too small as well. Try a watch on and see how it fits. Pay special attention to the lugs, which connect your watch to its bracelet or strap. They shouldn’t reach beyond the width of your wrist. Give a smaller watch than you might typically be comfortable with a chance. A massive timepiece might appear to exude strength and derring-do, but a more conservative case size speaks volumes about one’s self-possession. Dare yourself to downsize–you might be surprised by how classic and refined a smaller watch dial can feel.

5. Don’t be too matchy-matchy
General watch wisdom suggests that your watch ought to match your belt and shoes. But your wrist is your canvas. Seek out exotic hides, bright colors, and other unusual accents. If you’ve dressed yourself smartly, your watch can be your statement piece. So go boldly forth and let that timepiece do the talking.
