Hormonal changes are common after conception and during pregnancy. In fact, these changes give rise to certain symptoms in the body that serves to be early signs of pregnancy. One way the hormonal changes affect a pregnant woman is by giving rise to vaginal discharge.

A clear, milky discharge from the vagina with a musky smell is perfectly normal and is considered an early sign of pregnancy. However, not all women might experience the same. Pregnancy symptoms can vary from one person to the other. With vaginal discharge too, some women might experience a lot of mucus production from the vagina while others might notice little or no production at all.

For women who notice this kind of discharge, know that the hormone progesterone is at it. A surge in the progesterone level leads to excessive vaginal discharge during pregnancy. Although, this can be a little annoying for women who experience it, but this also have a hidden benefit. This vaginal secretion helps keep urinary tract infection at bay, which is way too common during pregnancy due to suppressed immunity. Vaginal secretion during pregnancy helps good bacteria to thrive in the sensitive area.

In fact, women who notice vaginal discharge during the initial days of pregnancy should be prepared to face the same throughout the nine months. It can increase in production a few weeks prior to labour, lubricating the birth canal to prepare for the birthing process. Alternatively, vaginal discharge at any time during pregnancy isn’t a sign of worry. The only time you should worry about vaginal discharge during pregnancy is when you spot droplets of blood or experience spotting.
