The Truth About Fear

Make a Friend Freak Out
Opting for the trick, not the treat? Joe Gatto, host of TV's Impractical Jokers, likes this move: First, find a helper. Then empty your fridge, shelves and all. Turn it off and hide inside. Have your helper ask the innocent victim to grab a beer. When the fridge door opens, burst out screaming. As he's catching his breath, tell him he's experiencing a spike in his heart rate of about 20 beats per minute, according to research from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Your point? No matter what he says, you did not nearly give him a heart attack. Now hand that man a beer.

Stave Off Stage Fright
Public speaking can cause paralyzing fear. While you're still able to move, flip your smartphone camera to selfie and video mode, hold it out, and hit "record," says Bill Hoogterp, author of Your Perfect Presentation. Wave and say hello. Then play it back, focusing on what you did well. Next, say something ridiculously effusive: "I'm the sexiest man in the room!" Again, play it back, looking for positives. Now prop the phone up, walk around, and talk about your work. Keep doing this, adding more each time. These mini ego boosts will lift your confidence and settle your nerves.
