Health Minister plans to transform medical and dental councils of India

Dr Harsh VardhanHealth Minister Harsh Vardhan Monday promised a ‘radical’ transformation in regulatory bodies like the medical and the dental councils of India. Addressing a press conference on the 100 days’ working of the health ministry, he said: ‘We want to take transparency to the highest level. About medical and dental councils, there is a perception that they are not very transparent.’

He said: ‘So, we are studying and discussing their structure. There will be radical change and transformation in their structure.’ He added: ‘We are objectively studying these issues and will try and address them. I have told all medical organisations to actively take action against their erring members.’
The medical and dental councils of India have the responsibility of enforcing discipline and bringing to notice unethical practices.

The health minister said that after taking charge of the ministry, he had promised transparency and elimination of corruption. He said: ‘Numerous steps have been taken to improve transparency like an online food product approval system which became operational Sep 9.’ The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation has started uploading on its website all details of pending applications.

Harsh Vardhan added that the Central Government Health Services (CGHS) has been uploading on its website all information regarding medical claims that are pending for more than 30 days. He said steps have also been initiated to make drug procurement completely IT-guided while tracking online their delivery to government institutions across the country. He added: ‘I expect the health system’s delivery to grow manifold and the efficiency of its personnel to double by rewarding diligence and outmatching the corrupt.’
