pot belly dressingI am a 28-year-old working professional. I am a bit on the plump side and have a protruding belly. I often find my stomach looking too prominent with the clothes I usually wear. What do I wear to hide my belly fat?

If you have a pot belly, then you have to change your dressing style to conceal it. Here is what you could do.

Ditch tight clothing

You shouldn’t wear anything body-hugging as it is only going to highlight the area you want to hide the most. No tight shirts with buttons that are about to pop out.  Avoid muscle-fit shirts. Note that loose clothing will not make you look thinner, it is the right fit that matters.

Choose the right fabric

You can look completely off if you haven’t paid attention to the material you have worn. Even if the style and pattern of your attire is good, the material can work against you. Avoid wearing satin, lycra, or even tight sweaters.

Avoid ill-fitted pants

This is of utmost importance, especially if you have to wear formal trousers. You should know the waist size that fits you best, and fit and style of the pants you chose. If you are clueless, ask the brand stylist or the sales person at the store to guide you through different styles. Also, ensure you are comfortable and it does not sit awkwardly on your waist. Do not opt for low-waist pants. It  won’t help you look any better. In fact, your stomach will pop out more. Instead, wear mid-waist pants or trousers.

Choose the right colour

Dark colours are an easy way to look slimmer. However, wear either your shirt or pant in a dark colour and not both as the whole look might turn out very dull. For instance, you could wear a pair of navy blue trousers with a maroon shirt. You could also choose colours as per your skin complexion. Men with a dusky or wheatish skin tone could play with bold colours, like navy blue, dark brown, olive green, or even deep red. If you are fair-skinned then go for muted colours at least for your shirts and T-shirts.

Layer it

To move the attention from your belly, wear a jacket whenever possible. Experiment with various types of jackets. You could wear a a sleeveless  jacket or a waist coat, in a dark shade or wear a shirt with a darker colour and the jacket in contrast with it. Try out different prints like detailed checks, plaids  or even thin stripes. Also, try teaming this up with a basic tie if the rest of your look has bold colours and prints. Apart from this, you could wear straight-fit short kurtas, or even longer ones if preferred.

Comfort first

You shouldn’t be following trends blindly as you might just end up embarrassing yourself! You have to give comfort a priority and look for an outfit that tones you down rather than making you look bigger. Don’t wear something for the sake of looking stylish. Suit your personal style and maintain the balance.
