Can the Ebola-killing robot prevent spread of the deadly disease?

Ebola in USAfter the first Ebola case in Dallas, Texas, the United States is making all possible efforts to curb the spread of the deadly disease in US. Already the US has made significant global contribution to Ebola treatment with its the experimental drug ZMapp. And now, a Texas-based company has developed an Ebola killing robot, called ‘Little Moe’ that has the ability to destroy the deadly virus by fusing its DNA and clean a hospital room in five minutes. The germ-killing robot, developed by Xenex, uses ultraviolet light to sterilise surfaces infected with germs and has a wide application in hospital room sterilisation.


According to spokeswoman for Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, the germ-killing robot flashes ultraviolet light on surfaces in the hospital room. The UV light , damages the viral DNA. It can kill germs including Ebola present in a hospital room in 5 minutes and destroy an Ebola viral particle present on the surface in 2 minutes.



The robot flashes UV light 1.5 pulses per second in all directions, making sure that the virus has no chance to escape. Although the robot uses UV rays, the manufacturers have claimed it to be safe for humans.


Dr Mark Stibich, who works with Xenex said, ‘Our customers have seen and reported in the medical literature a reduction in these infections in the rate of up to 50 percent.’ The machine is right now being used in 250 hospitals across the US, including the hospital where the first man diagnosed with Ebola in US is being treated.
