How to Get Rid of Unused Pills (Flushing Is Not the Answer)

The average person hoards three expired prescription meds at a time. Then, when spring cleaning finally rolls around, most people simply toss the pills in the garbage or flush them down the toilet, finds a new report from the University of Illinois.

That's bad, because improper disposal can contaminate the water supply or leave meds accessible for abuse. Fortunately, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has developed a program that allows you to safely--and easily--dispose of your leftover pills.

This Saturday, September 27, is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The DEA encourages you to turn in your unwanted, unused, or expired Rx meds at a central location. Here's how to find the dropoff location nearest to you.
