Health Minister Harsh Vardhan to set up health camps at Ram Lila

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan addresses press at Patna Airport on June 20, 2014. (Photo: IANS)Every year, thousands of people gather to watch traditional enactment of Ramyana during Navratri festival. The health ministry identifies this traditional event as an opportunity to improve health in India. Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Wednesday revealed that this year Ram Lila would be linked with regular health checkups. The minister said that the camps will be set up at five locations during the ongoing festival, involving community health volunteers.

This would be done under Swasth Chetna Evam Jan Sahyog Abhiyaan (SCEJSA), which will be the first government initiative to draw people into the benefits of promotive and preventive health in the national capital. ‘SCEJSA camps have been opened at five big Ram Lila grounds and a Durga Puja mandap in Chittaranjan Park during the festive season. I urge all to avail this opportunity to get themselves checked by doctors from the leading hospitals of Delhi, and also avail free diagnostics and secondary treatment opportunities,’ said Harsh Vardhan.

The locations of the shivirs are: Luv-Kush Ram Lila at Lal Quila Maidan, Sri Balaji Ram Lila at CBD ground Karkardooma; Ram Lila Ground, Trinagar (Keshavpuram); Shalimar Bagh, near BL Block; and Ram Lila Ground in Ashok Vihar Phase 1 (near Dhyan Chand Stadium). The health ministry, in a statement, said: ‘More than 50 lakh people participate in the Ram Lila celebrations during the 10-day-long Navratri period’. In all, 26 doctors, 90 paramedics/nurses and more than 200 volunteers are involved in SCEJSA. They have been drawn from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and various hospitals of the Delhi government.

‘This is one of the ways a social movement around health should ideally work. We are finalizing a broader strategy, which will be discussed with the health secretaries of the states Oct 9. The gains from SCEJSA, in terms of experience, would serve as inputs for modelling a nation-wide health movement involving all stakeholders,’ he said.

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan encourages people to donate blood

Dr Harsh VardhanUnion Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Wednesday announced the government’s initiative, a nationwide social movement, to encourage people to donate blood, on the occasion of the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day.

The movement is aimed at bridging the gap between the demand and supply of blood. While addressing more than 2,000 school children and other volunteers he said, ‘We have a shortfall of 2-3 million units per year in India. Through more voluntarism we can easily make up the deficit. Till date, 84 percent of the requirement of safe blood has been fulfilled. We must take it to 100 percent soon.’

Highlighting the benefits of blood donation he said, ‘By donating a unit of blood a year a person can get more blessings than by going to a place of worship’. He also highlighted that donating blood does not cause deteriorate of heath and is in fact helps improve one’s health condition. It secures a person from heart attacks and cancer. It is a good way of burning calories and moreover gives the supreme satisfaction of saving lives, he added.

The minister also flagged a rally with the theme: ‘Run for the Little Red Dot Power’ at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to create awareness about blood donation. The rally comprised volunteers from different educational institutions, NSS volunteers, regular repeat voluntary blood donors, voluntary blood organisations and blood bank officers promoting the cause of voluntary blood donation.
