8th International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations comes to Manchester


The conference takes places on the 3rd and the 4th of April 2014

Thursday the 3rd – Responsible Tourism in Destinations
VisitEngland is partnering with the Responsible Tourism Partnership on day one of this conference to focus on the challenges of tourism development and destination management, This is VisitEngland’s key event during English Tourism Week (to see the agenda and link to Book)

Friday the 4th – Taking Responsibility, Achieving Change 
During this day they shall be addressing three topics and three challenges in order to learn more about how to encourage individuals and organisations to take responsibility and to achieve change across the triple bottom line of economic, social and environmental sustainability. In Manchester this year they want to explore and learn from a diverse range of initiatives taken by people seeking to take responsibility for tackling the issue and achieving change (Programme Link)

Wild Navigator’s Abhishek Behl will be speaking on the 4th of April in session – Wildlife & Heritage with topic: Wild Navigator: Inspiring Journeys in Responsible Tourism. Along with him other speakers include: Mohammad Rafiq Director, The Long Run Initiative &  Zeitz Foundation

Scottish Bird Fair 10th – 11th May 2014

Scotland’s big nature festival finally arrives once again at the grounds of the beautiful Hopetoun House, Edinburgh on the 10th and 11th of May 2014.

This is the third successful year of RSPB Scotland’s organisation where they join thousand of wildlife lovers in the beautiful grounds of the Hopetoun House for the Scottish Birdfair. There’s something for everyone at this award winning festival – Kids visiting experience delights of storytelling, crafts, woodland walks with expert guides, face painting, puppet shows, games, wildlife photography, bush craft workshops and lots other things to keep busy.

The elders / grown ups too are not left out as they can get involved in walks, talks, bee keeping, bushcraft, the latest optics and outdoor gear displays, farmers’ market with fresh local produce, workshops and yes travel and tours advice and inspiration and that’s where we come in …….

Treasures of the South

The tour takes you on a discovery of the lost kingdoms of the Deccan Plateau and the exciting beaches of Goa.

For centuries, kingdoms great and small rose, flourished and fell in the harsh environs of the great Deccan Plateau in the southern enclaves of the Indian sub-continent. Peppered with tales of heroism and battles galore of treasures & cultural folklore, even today the Deccan Plateau remains a mysterious wonderland for travelers seeking new horizons to explore. The port town of Madras along the famous Coromandel Coast of south eastern India, steeped in history itself, is an excellent base for exploring the heritage offerings of the Deccan region.

Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram, within easy access, open up a treasure trove of ancient temples by the sea and a textile heritage dating back several centuries. Leaving the sea behind and moving past the verdantly picturesque hinterland set out for deep countryside to the city of Mysore which showcases its historic past in its stunning palaces and temples. To the north, wonder at the great temple sites at Belur and Halebid, and the baroque stylistic explorations situated in the Hoysala’s great temple ruins.

At Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, marvel at the expanse brooding ruins of the capital of the mighty Vijayanagara Empire. Journey into the heartland of the Deccan to Bijapur, the walled Islamic enclave of power and glory, before heading out to the Chalukyan seats of power at Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal.

The architectural diversity and splendour of these excellently preserved sites document the Deccan’s fabulous past. Admire these awesome sites then head off for Goa for a leisurely sojourn amongst the tropical sands and the balmy sea breezes.

Cultural Expedition To Ladakh

A land of mystery and folk lore, of Silk Route legends and ancient villages perched high above gushing rivers. Ladakh and its remote Zanskar region, scattered amongst the glorious Trans Himalayan expanses, will endlessly engage the visitor with its dramatic natural scenery, its Buddhist gompas with their painted murals and beautiful icons and its wild landscape rich in promise of adventure activities and cultural experiences.

With the fall of the great Tibetan empire, the kingdom of Tibet was, in 1020, split up amongst the three brothers of the ruling clan. One of the brothers moved into the southern region of the Tibetan Plateau and occupied the wild expanses of Ladakh. With him he brought the rich cultural elements of Tibetan Buddhism which slowly amalgamated with the local Bon religion. Many of the old local shrines were converted to Buddhist monasteries. To counter a Tibetan-Mongolian invasion its ruler Deldan Namgyal (ca 1620-1660) appealed to Kashmir for help. The invasion was stopped but from that time forward Ladakh was to come under the sway of the great Mughal rulers of India.

Today this harsh but dramatic land, with Leh as its capital, is the base of exciting adventure activities such as trekking, rafting, jeep tours and bird watching. Its monasteries, a repository of ancient art and scriptures, draw culture enthusiasts from around the globe.
